WHO WE ARE
Refugee Youth Service is a needs based organisation comprised of energetic and professional full time and volunteer staff. With a variety of backgrounds, experience and expertise, we are able to offer our service users a broad range of engaging and creative activities in professional and safe spaces equal to the high standards expected of any centre for minors and young people in Europe.
THE EARLY DAYS
Founded officially by Jonathan Willis, Benjamin Teuten and Aske Kreilgaard in November 2015, Baloos Youth Centre was a place in the minors could attend to enjoy a safe space to relax and engage in leisure activities amidst the chaos of the camp known as the 'Jungle' in Calais, France. Through a process of collaboration, creativity, and professionalism in what initially began as an attempt to provide peer to peer solidarity with residents, evolved to become an NGO developing sustainable, replicable solutions to support children affected by unplanned, mixed migration. The team grew to involve child protection, education and healthcare professionals, as well as volunteers from the camp’s community. Recognising the need for wider child centred services, 'Baloos' developed into Refugee Youth Service and provided a child friendly space offering an educational and recreational facility in the camp.
